Group of 2 US Coin Proof Sets 1978-1979 12 coins. Group of 2 US proof sets 1978-1979 12 coins. The 1978 Proof Set the number of coins to six. Sets now include Eisenhower Dollar, Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Cent. The quality of the coins found in the 1978 Proof Sets is generally excellent. Almost all coins encountered have deep cameo surfaces. Some 1978 proof coins have received perfect grades of PR70DCAM or PF 70 Ultra Cameo from PCGS or NGC. The 1979 proof set marked the debut of the new design and size of the one dollar coin. The Susan B. Anthony dollar was slightly larger than the quarter. The obverse of the coin featured the portrait of the female voter, and the reverse adopted the Eisenhower dollar's earlier design on a smaller canvas. The 1979 Proof coins included in the sets have two different types of mintmarks known as Type 1 or Type 2. Type 1 mintmarks have the area inside the letter filled in, while Type 2 mintmarks are clear and flat on top. The rarity of the Type 2 version varies by denomination, with the Susan B. Anthony Dollar being the rarest and carrying the highest premium, trending from pr69 to $65. The packaging of the 1979 sample set remained unchanged from the previous year, with one exception. A circular plastic ring was fitted in the large slot reserved for the dollar coin to accommodate the new denomination. The packaging would be redesigned the following year, especially for the small buck.
